One candidate for the win: The Prosecutor and protector of the American people. My reflection on the election
Hey guys,
I want to start by asking you guys a few questions to think about throughout this piece: Why was America founded? Why did our ancestors sacrifice so much for a better future? Why do we continue to protest, stand up for our beliefs, and strive for progress?
The founding fathers held the value of freedom, though their perspective on freedom was very different from ours today. They envisioned a country where representation mattered, where people had a voice in shaping their future. We still hold and carry that value of freedom and representation of all people with various backgrounds in our hearts as individuals and as a community.
Take a moment to think about that…
We live in a nation founded on the mission of representing the people and pursuing freedom. Throughout history, our ancestors fought, endured hardship, and engaged in good trouble to ensure their voices—and ours—were heard. They never gave up until everyone had a chance to be represented, knowing it was America's job to ensure justice and equality.
Yet, the work is far from over. We have made tremendous progress in this country. We still have a long way to go but must acknowledge the progress. Our ancestors wanted us to continue writing the American story—one rooted in fairness, justice, and freedom. This is our story, this is a place we call home. Now the question is, are we ready to fight for it?
Time to introduce Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Waltz of Minnesota
VP Kamala Harris
She is the current Vice President, serving with President Joe Biden since 2021. She served as the Senator from California from 2017 to 2019 and was an attorney general of California from 2010 to 2017. She was the district attorney from 2004 to 2010. She ran for president from 2019 to 2020, and then Joe Biden picked her as his running mate. She is married to the first second gentleman, Douglas Emhoff, who helps her protect America and was an attorney. They have a blended family.
She fought and advocated for stricter gun laws, reproductive care, LGBTQ+ rights, and affordable housing during her tenure as senator. As attorney general, she fought against criminals who would steal and abuse the American people. For example, she won a 20 billion dollars settlement for Californians whose houses had been foreclosed. She prosecuted child sexual assault cases, protecting and getting justice for kids who experienced sexual assault in the earlier years of her work. She also has been a huge supporter of disability rights. She met with disability advocates and grassroots leaders to talk about their concerns about airport travel, transportation, and more. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, VP Harris, and the Biden-Harris team “outlined how they will expand accessibility through the transit systems and airports” to make it easier for disabled people to travel (White House website, 2023). Now, the Federal Transit Administration announced that the 8 transit systems will receive 343 million dollars to fix the oldest systems through the All Stations Accessibility Program that VP Harris and the Biden Administration created under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill. That’s just one of dozens and hundreds of bills she created or helped to help the lives of all Americans.
Governor Tim Waltz of Minnesota
He served in the US Army for 24 years and received the title Command Sergeant Major Waltz. He was a social studies teacher and a football coach who helped his students and team succeed. He was the advisor to the first Gay Straight Alliance at the school. He met his wife, Gwen, who was also a teacher there. They have two kids, Hope and Gus.
He was a Representative from 2007 to 2017 and a ranking member of the House of Veterans Affairs. He is the first elected democratic Governor in Minnesota. He has been fighting for LGBTQ+ rights and stricter gun laws and helped get a free food program in schools. He has also provided universal free meals for students in Minnesota schools, cut taxes for the middle class, protected reproductive care, and more. He wants to ensure that everyone feels protected and safe in their state and in America.
My reflection on VP Harris and Governor Tim Waltz:
For me, Vice President Harris and Governor Walz represent the best choices for leading this country forward. They are champions of progressive policies that will protect our rights, expand economic growth, and create a more just and inclusive society.
Harris has demonstrated her commitment to the people throughout her career, and her compassion comes through in every speech. She has made it clear that she is a leader for all Americans, from the disability community to the LGBTQ+ community, and everyone in between. Her ability to listen and understand the needs of individuals and the nation as a whole sets her apart.
With his background in education and public service, Governor Walz has shown he understands everyday people's needs. He has fought for students, teachers, and families, and his track record proves he will continue fighting for all Americans. Together, Harris and Walz make a powerful and joyful team—one that I believe will lead with empathy, strength, and a clear vision for the future.
Even though I may not agree with every policy they've put forward, I believe they are the right leaders for this period/era in the American story. I want a President and Vice President who lifts up all communities, including the disability community, the Black and African-American community, the Asian-American community, the Hispanic and Latinx community, the senior citizen community, lower and middle-income class communities, and working-class families. We are called the "United States" for a reason.
One last question:
As Vice President Harris says in her campaign video: What kind of country do we want to live in?
This is the question we all need to consider as we approach the election. I encourage you to research the election and vote whichever works for you.
If you’re interested in watching the first debate between Vice President Harris and Former President Trump will take place on Tuesday, September 10th, at 8 p.m. ET. I encourage you to see for yourself how these two candidates plan to lead our country. We have 58 days left until one of the most critical elections of modern times, and let’s research and share with our family, friends about the election in November!
